Explore The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center

Just a short 20-minute drive from our apartments near Tidewater Community College is a marine lover's paradise—the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center. There is plenty to explore and discover at this aquarium with its 800,000 gallons of exhibits and displays. From Sandbar Sharks and Harbor Seals to the tiny jellyfish, there is something for everyone. For residents at The Apartments at Spence Crossing, this is a must-see destination.

Reserve in Advance

This is one of the nation's most visited aquariums, so don't make the mistake of showing up without reserving a time slot first. Guests must arrive on time and can enjoy the exhibits from 9:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m.

Animals To Spot

As you walk to the entrance, you may be greeted by Hector, the Harbor Seal. As you journey inside, look out for spotted turtles in the marshland exhibit. As the trail goes on, take a moment to watch the giant Komodo dragons mosey about in their habitats.

One of the most mesmerizing displays is the aquarium tunnel. Get a look at the teeth on the Sandbar, Zebra, and Sand Tiger Sharks. The aquarium also features the fearsome and endangered Tomistoma freshwater crocodile.

At the ray touch pool, you can get up close to the stingrays and touch them as they come flapping around the pool.

Nature Trail

This aquarium is unique in that it sits on a salt marsh. The Nature Trail is a 1/3 mile boardwalk that will take you through the woods and to outlook posts overlooking the water. It’s the perfect way to take in the serene views and wildlife that surround the marsh.

Osprey Cafe

Yummy sandwiches, salads, and desserts are a great way to end a trip to the aquarium. Osprey Cafe is right next to the Nature Trail and offers made-to-order sandwiches and pizzas. Try the smoked turkey bacon & chipotle panini or a nice grilled chicken salad. Don’t miss the pesto chicken pizza with a normal or cauliflower crust. The specialty desserts like lemon bars, oreo dream bars, and lush cupcakes are a must try.

After your trip to The Virginia Aquarium, you can grab a delicious dessert from a Virginia Beach shop. You won't regret it. To find out what The Apartments at Spence Crossing has to offer, contact us. We'd love to show you our amenities firsthand.
